The charity I have chosen is SMART which stands for Start Making A Reader Today. It’s a program that matches volunteers to public school students. The students get one-on-one consistent reading time with this volunteer. It’s just extra reading time. Simple, but the most effective way to improve someone’s reading skills. Just read. Often the programs give books away to these students who need them most. When I was teaching, the kids I referred to this program were ones who had few if any books at home and parents who were too busy to sit and read together. These children didn’t recognize letters when they started kindergarten and sometimes couldn’t recognize their name yet. For kids like this to get one on one time with an adult focused just on them – without an agenda – is HUGE. It’s the next best thing to snuggling up with a family member and a book.

We’ve got a few of the same books. I thought Press Here was fun but my niece said, “it’s just a dot it doesn’t do anything.” I couldn’t get her as excited about that book as I was. I still love it and find it fun.
